Headquartered on Hilton Head Island, SC, Data Publishing Inc. was established in 1986 by the Hargray Communications Group, the island's local telephone company. Our original purpose was to publish the Hargray Communication Phone Directory, handling everything from the yellow page advertising sales to the book's design and layout. The goal was to produce an enhanced book of valuable information that focused on quality and the customer.

     The result of this focus was a tremendous increase in revenue and quality for Hargray's directory. In 1989 and 1991 we won the award from the Yellow Pages Publishers' Association for design excellence. In 1992, we won the Association's highest award, the APPY, for a community service project we created concerning missing children. We were again recognized in 1995 by the Publishing and Printing Association for directory excellence and received the Marketing Partner Award from the Association of Directory Marketing that same year.

     The success of our Hargray directory has led to tremendous growth. We now publish 12 directories throughout the southeast, consisting of rural and independent telephone company and retirement community books. Even with this growth we have consciously tried to not grow too much or too fast, as we believe that the quality of our books is far more important than the quantity of books we do.
